What Kansas City lawns need this time of year

  • Aug 25 to Oct 10The seeding window

University of Missouri Extension puts the window for cool-season seed at August 25 to October 10. Seed that goes down later in the window has fewer growing weeks before winter.

  • Late September to early NovemberPerennial broadleaf weeds

MU puts the best timing for perennial broadleaf weeds in late September, and Johnson County Extension calls late October through early November the most effective. On new seed the spray waits until the grass has been mowed three times.

  • October through NovemberLeaf drop

University of Missouri puts peak fall color around the third week of October, with ash and maple leaves down in October and November and oaks in November and December. Johnson County Extension says to chop them into the lawn each time about an inch covers the turf, and that up to six inches over a season goes back in that way. Oaks keep dropping past the last mowing, which Johnson County puts mid-November through Thanksgiving.

The person who quotes your lawn is the person who treats it

Read the BBB complaints against the big lawn companies and two keep coming back: an application nobody asked for, and nobody to reach afterwards.

  • Same person, quote to finish

I measure the lawn, I write the quote, I run the machine. Your address does not get handed to a route.

  • A straight answer on method

Aeration and broadcast seed thicken a thin lawn. Bare ground fills in more evenly behind a slit seeder, and that costs more. You will hear which one your lawn needs even when it is the cheaper one.

  • One number

Calls and texts land on the same phone, and it is mine. Nobody schedules your lawn but me.

How it goes

How an aeration visit goes

  1. You send the address

The form asks for the address first, because I measure the lawn before I call. A written quote comes back to you. Nothing is booked from the form itself.

  2. Water a day or two before

Aeration needs moisture in the soil. K-State's aeration guide says dry soil stops the tines short of depth and wet soil clogs them. If it has rained, skip it.

  3. Aeration day

Cores two to three inches deep and about three inches apart, more than one pass, front yard and back. The plugs stay on the lawn and crumble back in, carrying soil microbes up into the thatch layer.

  4. Seed goes down the same day

Seed goes down after the cores come out, split across two passes in different directions so the coverage comes out even. It belongs on the opened surface, where the crumbling plugs cover it, not at the bottom of a three-inch hole.

  5. Then it is your turn

Keep the top half inch of soil damp until the seed is up. In September soil, fescue usually shows in seven to fourteen days.
